Mersenne numbers are named after the French monk Marin Mersenne. These numbers are of the form 2P-1. A small percentage of these numbers are prime. A Lucas-Lehmer primality test is used to find which Mersenne numbers are prime. The links below give a wonderful description of Mersenne numbers and their history.
